Rubbing Alcohol and Some of its Unique Uses

What is Rubbing Alcohol

There are various types of alcohol that we know of and some of the common ones are those that we drink. Beer and wine are known as ethyl alcohol and are produced by yeast. Whiskey on the other hand is a type of ethanol similar to car fuels, which undergoes a distillation process and usually contains 40% alcohol and 60% water. Rubbing alcohol is a generic term that can either be denatured alcohol or isopropyl alcohol. Take a walk along your hardware stores and you will find bottles of alcohol. These are known as denatured alcohol, which is also a type of ethanol and has been poisoned to keep people from drinking it. It is usually used as a form of cleaning agent.

Isopropyl alcohol, which is usually found in drug stores, is known as IPA or isopropanol. It is similar in function and structure to ethanol, destroys bacteria, viruses and fungus but it is not that effective on dehydrating living tissues hence it is more effective for disinfecting skin than ethanol. Some common uses are found in hospitals where nurses use it to clean skin of pathogens before giving an injection.
